'Conquer Cryptic Crosswords' at Barry O'Keefe Library

13 June 2017

Lovers of crossword puzzles should make a date to attend the next Monday Matters at Barry O’Keefe Library when cryptic crossword aficionado Ralph Penglis will present two workshops designed for beginners or those who wish to brush up their basic skills.

“This ‘Monday Matters’ is quite different as there will be two workshops, the first on Monday 3 July, with a follow-up session on Monday 10 July,” Librarian Jane Roughley said. “Both will run from 10.30am to 12.30pm and participants must attend both workshops.”

Ralph Penglis ran his own hair salon on campus at Sydney University for 24 years. He developed an interest in cryptic crossword puzzles while peering over the shoulders of his clients who were often engrossed in crosswords. From there his passion developed and, now that he has retired, he enjoys passing on his knowledge to others. He is also a yoga teacher.

“If you want to unravel the mysteries of the cryptic crossword and learn the basic tricks of the trade, come to these workshops,” Jane said. “You’ll learn how to uncover clues hidden in anagrams, containers, double meanings, acronyms and more as well as having a lot of fun!”

‘Conquer Cryptic Crosswords’ will take place at 10.30am on Monday 3 July and Monday 10 July.

Monday Matters is a free event. Bookings are essential on 9978 4091 or at events.mosman.nsw.gov.au.
