2017 Citizens of the YearPosted Friday 27 January 2017
During Australia Day celebrations Mosman’s 2017 Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year were announced by Mosman Mayor Peter Abelson.
A life of service to the local community has seen Steve Morato named Mosman’s 2017 Citizen of the Year.
As well as volunteering his time tutoring at his daughters’ school over the years, Mr Morato has shown outstanding commitment to the community through his work at Mosman Men’s Shed, where he is a committee member and supervisor. With over 50 members, the work undertaken by Men’s Shed assists local community groups and Council with repairs, refurbishments and restorations.Mr Morato is described as a master craftsman, highly skilled in the use of all types as tools, and as a supervisor of extraordinary ability, capability and knowledge who is able to train others in a safe environment.
Another major contributor to the local community, teenager Nicola Hughson, has been named Mosman’s 2017 Young Citizen of the Year.
Nicola, who graduated from Queenwood School for Girls in 2015, was a community prefect 2015 (major event organising/facilitating Queenwood’s participation in Red Shield appeal), has shown keen involvement with Mosman Netball Club for 10 years and has organised a charity art event to support Taldumande (homeless youth).
In addition to this, she’s also been a chair of Mosman Youth Forum, co-founder of the MOSCARD, pioneered Mosman’s youth volunteer program in 2013 with the Viewfinders environmental group, and is currently working on starting a social enterprise related to mental health education in the workplace.
Mosman’s Australia Day Ambassador Nadine Blayney, Deputy Business Editor at SKY News Business, delivered a warm and engaging Address and we were very fortunate to have this Mosman resident join us to celebrate the day.
We were honoured to have The Hon. Tony Abbott MP, Federal Member for Warringah with us for the ceremony. Mr Abbott participated in the official proceedings and delivered a very meaningful welcome to new citizens.
