Fit for the Future

Mayor Peter Abelson delivered a Mayoral Minute advising of the State Government’s Fit for the Future reforms for local government in NSW, and outlining action taken by Council to date in addressing these reforms. The Mayoral Minute, which was endorsed by Council, also outlined a program of community engagement regarding Fit for the Future options, due to commence in February 2015. Council endorsed the action already taken as well as the proposed program of community consultation.

Audit Committee Report

The Chair of Council’s Audit Committee, Mr Brian Halstead, attended the meeting to present his report on the operation of the Committee since November 2013. It was noted at the meeting that Council appreciates the thorough and professional work of the Audit Committee. Council formally resolved that Mr Halstead be thanked for his report and also that the independent members of the Audit Committee be thanked for their valuable contribution.

Street Lighting and Electricity

Council discussed the need for contemporary, cost-effective street lighting in Mosman and other parts of metropolitan Sydney, particularly the need to move swiftly towards LED lighting technologies. It was resolved that Council make representations in support of more timely LED roll-out and to raise broader issues of street lighting utility.

Council also resolved to enter into a three year contract with 16 other Councils for the provision of electricity to large sites and street lighting. This joint purchasing arrangement will deliver an excellent result for Council, with the tendered price representing a reduction of approximately 4.4% on 2014-15 pricing.

A-Frame Signs and Weather Screens

Following debate on Council policy relating to A-Frame signs and weather screens on footpaths and other public land, Council resolved to seek a further report on measures taken by other Councils which allow A-Frame signs and also to further review the issue of weather screens in Mosman Square in consultation with relevant stakeholders.

Upcoming Community Consultations

Council considered reports on a revised Nature Strip Maintenance Policy as well as the recently-prepared Draft 2014 Mosman Recreational Needs Assessment Report. Both documents will be released for community comment for a minimum of 28 days from 2 February 2015. Details of each consultation will appear on Council’s website closer to this date.

Middle Head Aged Care Facility

Council considered an urgent motion on this matter, resolving that staff summarise all relevant communications in relation to the proposed aged care facility at Middle Head, for subsequent determination of any further action.
