Youth look to solve local problemsPosted Monday 16 March 2015
Mosman Youth Forum members will help shape Mosman Council’s planning in coming years by running the area’s largest youth consultation project which aims to find creative solutions to local problems.
The results of the consultation, which included surveys, focus groups, vox pops and peer interviews, will be launched during next month’s Youth Week which runs 10 to 19 April.
The Forum, which provides feedback to Council as well as developing strategies and activities on key issues, is one of a range of youth programs run by Mosman Council and supported by its Youth Services staff.
Forum member Kartik Shastri said he enjoyed making a difference in the local community through developing problem solving and other skills.
“While Mosman is a great suburb, like young people in other areas we are dealing with serious issues and providing a supportive environment such as through community youth groups is vital,” he said.
Katarina Thompson said her Youth Forum and volunteering experience had helped inspire her interest in studying political science.
“It has given me such an insight into the work involved in making communities more exciting and the only people who know what young people want are young people,” Kat said.
“It’s so empowering to be able to have a direct say in things that go on around you and have a positive impact on others in the community, and it is one of the best opportunities young people have to build skills in co-operation, creativity and leadership.”
The Youth Forum is currently looking for new members and expression of interest forms can be downloaded from youth.mosman.nsw.gov.au.
