The following items were considered at the August Council meeting.
Community Grants recipients
Each year Council awards a number of grants to community organisations for projects and activities that support community development, wellbeing, sustainability, resilience, culture and social cohesion. This year we awarded 25 organisations with partial or full funding, up to $5,000 each for a total of just over $90,000. Funding has been awarded to a number of organisations delivering a range of programs including domestic violence support, community events and much needed equipment for volunteer organisations.
Renewal of Balmoral Oval Skate Park
Mosman Council has secured a grant to support a Balmoral Oval improvement project focused on renewing the skate park, restoring bushland approximately 1,000m2, and upgrading pathways and signage. A key element of the project will be the renewal of the skate park to feature beginner to intermediate skater/scooter elements, accessible design, and improved safety. Community consultation is planned to engage the community on concept designs with construction scheduled for completion 2027.
Plans for Event-Ready Mosman
Council has secured a $500,000 grant from Transport for NSW to enhance place infrastructure and streamline street event approvals by the end of 2027. This initiative aims to support safer, event-ready streets and boost community and business activities. The project includes upgrades to power supply, removable bollards, festoon lighting, and road surface improvements across Middle Head Road, Avenue Road, and Village Green. We’ll also be simplifying event approvals via a standardised Traffic Management Plan and a web-based application platform. Council will be consulting with the community in the coming months with design and delivery of the upgrades to be completed in 2027.
Shark Bite Kits
Council will install seven shark bite trauma kits at key swimming beaches to enhance emergency response for rare but serious shark incidents. This initiative aims to provide immediate access to critical trauma equipment and improve safety for beach users. This initiative was the result of a Councillor Notice of Motion in July and now plans are in place to have the kits installed before Summer. Locations will include Balmoral Beach, Edwards Beach, Clifton Gardens, Sirius Cove, and Chinamans Beach.
Greener Together Canopy Partnership Pilot
The Greener Together Cross-Council Canopy Partnership Pilot proposes a collaborative urban greening initiative between Mosman Council and another Sydney metropolitan council to enhance tree canopy and community engagement. This pilot aims to combine environmental benefits with volunteer participation and regional cooperation. Mosman is home to significant tree canopies compared to other areas of Sydney and we want to leverage our strong volunteer network and expertise in bush regeneration to collaborate with other areas.
