Harbour shark alerts
As part of the NSW Government's Shark Management Program, two Tagged Shark Listening Stations have been installed in Sydney Harbour for the first time, including one near Balmoral in Middle Harbour. The stations provide real-time alerts through the SharkSmart app when tagged sharks are detected nearby, helping Mosman residents and visitors make informed decisions when swimming, paddling, boating and enjoying the Harbour.
Alerts are sent when a tagged shark comes within approximately 500 metres of a listening station. Located near Balmoral and Lady Bay, the stations are positioned to monitor the movement of tagged sharks entering and leaving Sydney Harbour.
The new Harbour stations are identical to the 37 listening stations already operating along the NSW coastline as part of the state's Shark Management Program. Together, this network currently tracks 1,698 white sharks, 938 tiger sharks and 374 bull sharks.
The expansion of the listening station network into Sydney Harbour provides the Mosman community and other Harbour users with additional information about shark movements, while also supporting ongoing research into the behaviour and movement patterns of bull sharks in the Harbour.
