Posted on Monday 24 August 2026

Mayor Ann Marie Kimber has written letters to the Prime Minister and the federal defence and finance ministers as part of Council’s ongoing advocacy for the future of the HMAS Penguin site.

Through a series of resolutions passed at its meetings, Council has stated its opposition to any sale or privatisation of the HMAS Penguin site, supporting its continuation as a public asset for future generations.

Mayor Kimber has now written letters to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Defence Minister Richard Marles and Finance Minister Katy Gallagher asking that HMAS Penguin be excluded from any Defence estate divestment program.

The Mayor has previously written to the Defence and Finance departments.

Council also made a formal submission to the Australian Parliament’s inquiry into the Management of Defence estate assets.
