From the Mayor - 23 April 2025
Over recent weeks, Mosman Council has hosted two well-attended town hall forums – one in person and one online – to help our community understand the NSW Government’s new low and mid-rise housing reforms. These are now in effect and bring significant changes to residential planning controls across the state, including in Mosman.
While Council had already lodged a submission outlining our concerns, the forums provided an opportunity to clearly explain the reforms and answer questions about how they may impact our neighbour-hoods. Many residents expressed concern about potential effects on local character, infrastructure, and the environment, and we will continue to advocate for Mosman’s interests as further details emerge.
Following a resolution at the April Council meeting, we have also responded to proposed parking reforms from the NSW Government, which affect both on-street and beach parking. Our submission raises serious concerns about the potential loss of local control and flexibility – particularly in areas of high demand – and the impact these changes could have on residents, visitors, and small businesses.
Go to transport.nsw.gov.au to view what’s proposed and have your say by emailing parking_guidelines@transport.nsw.gov.au by 2 May.
During May we celebrate the important contributions that community members make through volunteering. National Volunteer Week, running from 19 to 25 May, recognises the vital role volunteers play and encourages others to get involved. Learn more at mosman.nsw.gov.au/volunteering.
In Mosman, volunteers contribute over 5,000 hours each year to civic programs and services including youth and library services, Bushcare, and the Mosman Art Gallery – many having done so for over a decade. I look forward to personally thanking Mosman’s large and active volunteer contingent at a special afternoon tea during Volunteer Week.
Community plays a vital role in delivering local projects, and Council’s Community Grants Program – now open for applications – supports this work. In the past year, grants have supported initiatives such as non-competitive community triathlons, sustainability programs in schools and homes, and support services for residents experiencing domestic violence. Grants of up to $4,000 are available for 2025–26. Learn more at yourvoicemosman.com.au.
Finally, a reminder to please join me at Mosman’s ANZAC Day service at 5.30am at the Georges Heights Parade Ground.
