From the Mayor - 26 November 2025

The NSW government’s one-size-fits-all planning reforms have been further strengthened with Parliament’s recent passing of the Planning System Reforms Bill.  These reforms will deliver faster approvals for large-scale development proposals, further reduce both Council and community involvement in the decision-making process and continue to undermine Council’s ability to deliver local strategic planning.

Our small but highly professional and dedicated planning team is working assiduously with external consultants to deliver an infrastructure audit that will identify the critical requirements associated with increased density in our local area. At the same time, Council is developing a localised Affordable Housing Policy to clearly articulate our commitment to enabling a more diverse housing mix, including identifying opportunities for affordable or key worker housing in appropriate locations. Additionally, the General Manager continues to negotiate with the Department of Planning to clarify the scope and expectations for any potential alternative plan for Mosman, noting the Minister’s earlier declaration that an alternate plan would not ‘switch off’ the current reform mapping for Mosman.

During this time of significant change and upheaval not of our making, it is easy to forget the good things and the many happy community occasions we have experienced together over the year.

A wonderful sense of vibrancy and community in Mosman is especially felt during the festive season. It’s a time for celebration and a great opportunity to support our local businesses. Whilst enjoying the festive window displays as part of our Rapt competition and placing your all-important People’s Choice Award vote for your favourite display, please consider purchasing a gift and donating it to our annual Gift Appeal. We’re once again partnering with The Salvation Army, who will distribute items donated at the Civic Centre by 8 December, to families in need across northern Sydney.

It is with this sense of generosity, pride and community spirit that we continue to build this wonderful suburb we call home. A huge thank you to the many individuals, groups, volunteers, businesses, organisations and others for the energy and care you’ve given to our community this year.

I wish you all a safe, happy and relaxing festive season.
