New EV charging policy

Posted on Wednesday 13 May 2026

Mosman Council has adopted a new policy to support the growing uptake of electric vehicles (EVs), making it easier for residents and providers to install on-street charging infrastructure. As more people transition to EVs, access to convenient charging is becoming increasingly important, particularly for residents without off-street parking. The new policy helps address this gap by providing a clear and consistent framework for installing chargers on Council land.

Rather than prescribing a single solution, the policy is deliberately technology-agnostic. This allows charge point operators (CPOs) and innovators to bring forward a range of solutions that meet Council’s requirements, supporting emerging technologies while ensuring installations are safe, practical and fit for purpose.

The policy prioritises pedestrian safety and the quality of Mosman’s public spaces. For example, solutions that create trip hazards—such as cables running across footpaths, or negatively impact visual amenity are not supported. Instead, proposals such as underground or under-footpath connections, and other well-designed approaches, can be considered on their merits.

Council remains open to innovation and will continue to monitor developments in EV charging technology. The aim is to enable practical solutions that work for residents, while maintaining safety, accessibility and the character of the public domain.

Anyone looking to install EV charging infrastructure on Council land will need to submit a formal application, including approval for works on Council land. Council is working to ensure this process is as streamlined as possible to support early adopters and reduce barriers to uptake. Overall, the policy strikes a balance - supporting the shift to electric vehicles while ensuring Mosman’s streets remain safe, accessible and visually appealing.
