Seabirds to Seascapes display installed

A new Seabirds to Seascapes educational display was installed today at Balmoral, giving the local community a direct connection to marine restoration underway in Sydney Harbour and along the NSW coastline.

The temporary display explains how Sydney Harbour is being restored, shows how penguins and seals use local waters, and highlights how residents can report sightings and contribute to real scientific research. 

It’s part of a four-year NSW Government program, led by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), that brings together government, research institutions and conservation organisations to restore marine habitats and strengthen protection for species such as little penguins and Australian and New Zealand fur seals.

The program includes three initiatives: The Great Big Little Penguin Count, the first comprehensive census of little penguins across 12–15 offshore islands; The Great Seal Reveal, the first statewide drone- and satellite-based survey of fur seals; and Project Restore, led by the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, which is rebuilding damaged harbour habitats through living seawalls, seagrass and sea meadow restoration.
