Volunteers share their stories
As part of National Volunteer Week, 19-25 May 2025, we are recognising and celebrating the people who go above and beyond for Mosman, while encouraging new volunteers to get involved in their community.
Volunteers collectively contribute thousands of hours of their time each year to support civic programs and services, across a range of areas including Community Care, youth services, Bushcare, library services and the Mosman Art Gallery.
Candy Chan is one such volunteer. Candy gives her time to support a range of services, including community transport and programs to assist residents to get out and about, and says volunteering is a meaningful way to connect with the community and give back.
In Candy’s own words:
“My name is Candy Chan, and I’m thrilled to be part of the community of Mosman Seniors Centre. I moved to Mosman in May 2023, and it was my wonderful neighbour, Jeroo, who introduced me to this fantastic place. I’m grateful to [Council's Volunteers Coordinator] Lourdes [Moreno] for her kind support in guiding me towards volunteer opportunities in childcare and aged care.
Volunteering is a meaningful way for me to connect with our community and give back. I truly believe that it enriches both my life and the lives of others. One of the best parts of my role here is helping to connect people. For instance, I introduced Patrick, our 92-year-old member, to Lily for English lessons. Patrick feels valued and engaged, while Lily gets to learn a new skill. It’s heartwarming to see such connections blossom!
Through my volunteering, I’ve also participated in a variety of activities like table tennis, general exercise, community walks, and English teaching. Helping out on the community bus, and community links assisting a resident to go out for a walk with a coffee afterwards. I’ve also assisted with the playgroup program, joining in on social outings, and singing classes have been wonderful experiences that have made settling into life here in Sydney so much easier.
I look forward to getting to know each of you better and sharing many enjoyable moments together. Thank you for welcoming me into this vibrant community!”
