At the age of 18, Stuart Gilbert won the 1980 Australian Youth Championships in windsurfing.
In 1983 Greg Butchart, Melanie Webb and Stuart represented Australia at the World Teamsailing Championships in Italy and came home World Champions. They were runners-up in 1984 in Italy.
He was selected as a team reserve for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
He has won one World Teamsailing Championship and two World Windsurfer Championships placing second on three occasions.
In 1997 and 2001 he competed in the World Windsurfer Championships and came first in the Masters Division.
In 2000 he was a torch bearer for the Olympic Torch Relay.
