Born in Perth in 1938, Elliott showed early talent when he ran in a mile race at the age of 14.
On the 25th January 1958, Elliott ran a mile in under four minutes. He went on to compete in the Empire Games in Cardiff at which he won both the 880 yards and the mile.
After taking a break in 1959 to further his studies and get married he went on to participate in the Rome Olympics in 1960 at which he won a Gold Medal in the 1500m beating his own world record to do so.
He retired in 1961 having run 17 sub-four minute miles across the course of his career and having never been defeated in either the mile or the 1500m.
