Growing up on the shores of Sydney Harbour Douglas Brockhoff developed a keen interest in sailing and rugby in his youth.

In 1960 he and team mate Carl Ryves won the New South Wales Flying Dutchman Championships. Over the next five years he participated in a number of state and national sailing titles for different classes.

In 1965, Douglas teamed with his old partner Carl Ryves and skipper Norman Booth. They won the International Gold Cup 5.5 metre class on Sydney Harbour. This win gave the Southern Cross II and her crew selection to represent Australia in the European Gold Cup.

In 1972 while living in Japan he won the Japanese National Titles for the International Olympic Soling Class.
