In an illustrious sporting career, James Stewart has competed at three Olympic Games (Atlanta, Sydney and Athens), winning bronze in the Mens Coxless Fours in 2000 and bronze in the Mens Eight in 2004.

He has represented Australia at three world rowing championships: in France in 1997 where the Men's Eight come in third, in Germany in 1998 with the Coxless Fours taking fourth place, and in Canada in 1999 where the Coxless Fours took silver.

In the early 90s, James was Australian junior and trans-Tasman champion in the Men's Eight and a member of the Australian Youth Eight champion team. In 1993 he competed at the Henley Royal Regatta in Lucerne. At Under 23 World Championships he won silver in 1994 in Paris and gold in 1995 in the Netherlands.
