Peter G. Johnson
Rugby Union

A great hooker and Australia's longest serving Wallaby, Peter Johnson played 42 Tests for Australia in a career which lasted from 1959 until 1972. He captained Australia in five Tests.

Johnson made his debut against the British Lions at the Brisbane Exhibition Ground in 1959. He played on the losing side in his first two Tests but was part of a resurgence in Australian rugby that saw some memorable triumphs in the 1960s.

With John Thornett and Jon White he made up the legendary Wallaby front-row.

Australia shared the series against a dominant Springbok team in South Africa in 1963 and then won both Tests in Australia in 1965. Johnson also figured in two memorable wins on the 1966-67 tour of Britain, against Wales in Cardiff and England at Twickenham.

In district competition, he played for Randwick (he was named in their all-time Dream Team) and Sydney University.

Peter Johnson has been inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. He has also had his paintings hung in the Mosman Art Prize.
