Born in Maitland in 1913, but a resident of Mosman from the age of four, Ken Gulliver is a Mosman sporting icon.
In baseball, Ken represented Mosman from 1932-1961 and NSW in The Claxton Shield from 1937-1949. Captain of the Australian baseball team in 1946 and 1949, he was a life member of both the Mosman Baseball Club and the NSW Baseball League.
Ken's remarkable first grade cricket career with Mosman spanned 32 years, with a further 25 years in lower grades. A wily leg spin bowler, steady lower middle order batsman and magnificent fielder, Ken's record of over 1000 first grade wickets and nearly 10,000 first grade runs is unlikely ever to be surpassed. A born leader of men, Ken captained Mosman first grade for 14 seasons and was a member of three premiership teams. Ken also has the rare distinction of captaining his state in two sports: baseball in 1935 and 1938, and cricket in the 1938-39 season.
As a mark of the respect in which Ken is held, the Mosman Cricket Club established the annual Ken Gulliver Fielding Trophy. Also, the entrance near the Keith Johnson Grandstand at Allan Border Oval was officially named the Ken Gulliver Gates. A gentleman who was the epitome of sportsmanship, Ken received the Order of Australia Medal in 1985 for his sporting achievements and contribution to community life.
