Amanda Wilmot won a national sailing title in the Flying Ant class in 1969. The following year, at only 13 years of age, she represented Australia for the first time, at the world championships for Cherub class sailing in New Zealand.
Four years later at Torquay, England, a 17 year old Wilmot came away with the World Champion, Junior and Ladies' trophies.
She was the first Australian woman to win an open world sailing championship.
Amanda Wilmot has also competed in twelve Sydney to Hobart yacht races, a record number at the time for female participants.
