Solar power deal

Posted on Monday 28 February 2022

Renewable energy will help power Mosman’s streetlights and all council facilities after Mosman Council joined forces with 24 other participating councils.

In one of the largest renewable energy deals for local government the councils will be supplied with energy by three NSW solar farms through the arrangement which was brokered by the Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC) with electricity retailer ZEN Energy.

Worth approximately $180 million, the landmark retail electricity agreement will deliver more than 214 gigawatt hours of electricity per year to 25 councils which collectively represent more than 3 million people or almost 38% of the NSW population, with 83% of their total electricity supply to be covered by renewable energy.

Electricity is council’s largest source of emissions and, following a cut of 29% in operational electricity emissions over the past decade, the energy deal will further help council reach its net zero emissions for operations by 2030 target.

The participating councils are: Bayside, Burwood, Campbelltown, Canada Bay, Canterbury-Bankstown, Fairfield, Georges River, Hornsby, Hunters Hill, Inner West, Ku-ring-gai, Lane Cove, Liverpool, Mosman, North Sydney, Parramatta, Port Stephens, Randwick, Ryde, Singleton, Sutherland, Tamworth, Waverley, Willoughby and Woollahra.
