Council Launches Hub for Young Entrepreneurs

Posted on Monday 4 March 2019

Mosman Council has launched a new service for young people aged 17-25 years called The Young Entrepreneurs’ Hub.

The initiative is in response to findings from a recent survey of young people who live or work in Mosman, which found that education and employment are high priorities for them and they want more support in these areas.

Respondents expressed the need for a dedicated community space where they can work and collaborate, receive guidance on their employment and career options, and undertake workshops and training in entrepreneurial and professional skills.

With only 68% of university graduates finding employment within the first four months of completing a degree, the hub aims to provide local 17-25 year olds with opportunities to develop new skills, access to mentors and a way to connect with like-minded young people.

The Young Entrepreneurs’ Hub will be open on weekdays from 10am to 3pm and offer a drop-in co-working space with free high speed WiFi, hotdesks and onsite support from youth workers.

For the first term there will also be a series of five free workshops run by Generation Entrepreneurs on subjects like problem solving, design thinking, customer and product development, marketing and branding, and pitching and presentation.

According to CEO of Generation Entrepreneurs, Jack Leung, developing entrepreneurial skills can benefit all young people, regardless of their chosen pathway. “It’s about encouraging a mindset of critical and analytical thinking, as well as product and customer development. Even if entrepreneurship isn’t the direction for them, participants will be able to use these skills whatever path they take,” he said.

“Through our programs we have seen young people transform. By the end of a workshop, you see them step out of their comfort zone, with a renewed excitement for their future.”

The Young Entrepreneurs’ Hub officially opens on Friday, 8 March, and will be located in the Mosman Youth Centre, under Mosman Library and opposite Allan Border Oval. Generation Entrepreneurs’ workshops will run on five consecutive Fridays from 8 March, at 10.30am -12.30pm.
