Leading authors share their stories at Mosman Library
The author speaking program at Mosman’s Barry O’Keefe Library is off to a stellar start for 2019, and offers residents the opportunity to learn more about a variety of bestselling books from some of Australia’s leading authors.
Survival stories with Sandy Macken – 7pm, Wednesday 20 February 2019.
Mosman-born author and paramedic Sandy Macken will speak at Barry O’Keefe Library on Wednesday 20 February about her book, Paramedic: The Remarkable Resilience of the Human Spirit.
Paramedic draws on Macken’s 20 years working in emergency trauma with the NSW Ambulance Service, and her frontline experiences when seconds can mean the difference between life and death. It details the exhilaration and danger, the highs and lows of a two-decade long career including Macken’s most traumatic and uplifting moments.
Rare pictorial history with Vanessa Finney – 7pm, Monday 11 March 2019.
Vanessa Finney will speak at Barry O’Keefe Library on Monday 11 March about her fascinating story and rare pictorial record of the work of the Scott sisters, Transformations.
Transformations tells the complete story of the Scott sisters for the first time – their early lives in colonial Sydney, their training as naturalists and artists on the isolated Ash Island in the Hunter River near Newcastle, and their professional triumphs.
With their collecting boxes, notebooks and paintbrushes, Harriet and Helena Scott entered the masculine worlds of science and art to become two of 19th century Australia’s most prominent natural history painters. Finney records the work of two talented and determined women, who transformed nature into art with their extraordinary paintings of Australian moths and butterflies.
Life-changing surgery with Dr Munjed Al Muderis – 7pm, Monday 18 March 2019.
Author and world renowned surgeon Dr Munjed Al Muderis will speak at Barry O’Keefe Library on Monday 18 March about his book Going Back. This book shares the fascinating journey Dr Al Muderis has been taken on as a result of performing revolutionary specialist surgery, osseointegration.
Osseointegration involves implanting prostheses created by melding bone and metal, and attaching robotic limbs to restore sensation and permanent mobility. Dr Al Muderis has performed this procedure on hundreds of people, but his most extraordinary experience was returning to Iraq after 18 years, by invitation from the Iraqi government, to operate on those wounded in the horrific war against ISIS.
Dr Al Muderis’ stories are both heartbreaking and hopeful, told from the unique perspective of a refugee returning to his birth place as a celebrated international surgeon.
Crime mystery with Candice Fox – 7pm, Monday 25 March 2019.
Australia’s queen of crime fiction Candice Fox will speak at Barry O’Keefe Library on Monday 25 March about her latest thriller Gone by Midnight.
Fox’s first novel Hades won the Ned Kelly Award for best debut in 2014 from the Australian Crime Writers Association. The sequel, Eden, won the Ned Kelly Award for best crime novel in 2015, making Candice only the second author to receive this accolade back-to-back. She is also the author of best-sellers Fall, Crimson Lake and Redemption Point, all shortlisted for Ned Kelly and Davitt Awards.
In this latest book, a ten-year-old boy vanishes from a hotel room in Cairns. With no evidence of him leaving the hotel, investigators are called in by his mother, but will they find him before the public turns on her?
With three books set to be published in 2019, two co-written with bestselling author James Patterson, Candice’s reputation as one of Australia’s leading crime authors continues to grow.
