Mosman Art Gallery launches Acquisition Fund
Mosman Art Gallery has launched a new Acquisition Fund to support the continued expansion of the acclaimed Mosman Art Collection, and to mark the 10th anniversary of The Balnaves Gift of early Australian paintings which was generously donated in 2012 by the late Neil Balnaves AO.
To kick-start the fund, the gallery is supporting the proposed acquisition of Imants Tillers’ major work Factum 1, 2021, ahead of a planned survey exhibition of Tillers’ work in 2024, which will feature this work.
Tillers is a key figure in Australian art, having lived and worked in Mosman for a large portion of his life, with many of his works of and about Mosman. Factum 1, 2021, references Arthur Streeton’s painting From my camp (Sirius Cove), 1896, and reflects Tillers’ strong connection to the artistic heritage of Mosman.
“The new fund will ensure we can continue Neil’s inspiring legacy by acquiring and commissioning works for the Mosman Art Collection,” Mayor Carolyn Corrigan said.
“Mosman Council is committed to continuing its support of local art and artists through the Mosman Art Collection which in turn celebrates Mosman’s important place in Australian art history.”
“The Mosman Art Collection is one of the most significant small collections in Australia,” Mosman Art Gallery Director John Cheeseman said.
“This fund provides a chance to selectively enhance the collection and for the community to actively contribute and take pride in the acquisition of key works for the future.”
