Mosman Council targets carbon emissions in power deal
Mosman Council has joined forces with 24 other participating councils in securing one of the largest renewable energy deals for local government.
The councils will be supplied with energy by three NSW solar farms through the arrangement which was brokered by the Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of
Councils (SSROC) with electricity retailer ZEN Energy.
Worth approximately $180 million, the landmark retail electricity agreement will deliver more than 214 gigawatt hours of electricity per year to 25 councils which collectively represent more than 3 million people or almost 38% of the NSW population, with 83% of their total electricity supply to be covered by renewable energy.
“Mosman Council has opted for 100% renewable energy under the agreement which will help power all council facilities and streetlights throughout the area,” Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan said.
“Electricity is Council’s largest source of emissions and reducing our consumption has been a top priority so this deal will be a key plank in reaching our net zero emissions for operations by 2030 target.
“Mosman Council has been steadily reducing emissions and has already cut its operational electricity emissions by 29% over the past decade and we can now confidently lock in further significant cuts to our emissions in coming years.”
The participating councils are: Bayside, Burwood, Campbelltown, Canada Bay, Canterbury-Bankstown, Fairfield, Georges River, Hornsby, Hunters Hill, Inner West, Kuring-gai, Lane Cove, Liverpool, Mosman, North Sydney, Parramatta, Port Stephens, Randwick, Ryde, Singleton, Sutherland, Tamworth, Waverley, Willoughby and Woollahra.
The agreement commences on 1 July 2022 and runs to 2026, with an option to extend to 2030.
