Mosman Square and Village Green officially reopened
The revitalised Mosman Square and Village Green have been officially reopened following completion of major urban renewal works.
The renewed civic areas feature improved spaces for community events and outdoor dining as well as for families, such as a new interactive play area for children which complements the natural environment, and were opened during the first Mosman Market since works began earlier this year.
“This purpose-built area will provide a welcoming civic heart for Mosman residents who will be able to enjoy events, such as our open-air movies and monthly markets, outdoor dining at local restaurants and cafes, or relax and enjoy the ambience of the square while watching their children explore the new playground,” Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan said.
Historical aspects of the square, where the last major works were carried out in 1988, have been retained, such as the 18th century Italian Antico Fountain, which has been carefully restored and reinstalled in a more prominent location.
Artworks honouring the Indigenous heritage of Mosman have also been incorporated into the square’s entrance near Spit Junction.
Sustainability has been a strong focus with materials from the square re-used, including original pavers being re-laid and excess soil being used to back-fill the Village Green’s new turf surface.
Thirty one new trees have been planted, along with more than 1,200 small shrubs and feature plants, while low carbon concrete edging was used for the garden beds which were designed to support the optimal use of natural rainwater.
The works were funded by the NSW Government under the Department of Planning and Environment’s Public Spaces Legacy Program which invests in high quality public open space.
Together with the NSW Government, Mosman Council is delivering vital infrastructure for communities to love the place they live.
The NSW Government contributed $3.2 million to the Mosman Square and Village Green project.
