Mosman Youth Awards in Literature winners announced
Winners of the 2019 Mosman Youth Awards in Literature were announced at the awards presentation evening held at Barry O’Keefe Library on Wednesday 28 August.
Now in its 27th year, the popular competition attracted 343 entries from aspiring young writers in Kindergarten to Year 12 from across Sydney. The awards recognise writing in the categories of prose for Primary (K-6), Junior Secondary (Years 7-9) and Senior Secondary (Years 10-12), and poetry for Junior Secondary (Years 7-9) and Senior Secondary (Years 10-12).
The awards presentation was attended by 140 guests including short-listed entrants and their families, teachers, sponsors, competition judges and councillors.
Judges congratulated the short-listed writers for their exceptional work and commented that the high standard of this year’s entries made it extremely difficult to select the winners. Sixteen young writers were recognised with awards and commendations:
Primary Prose
- 1st Prize – Georgia Slack
- 2nd Prize – Jimin Lee
- Highly Commended – Iolanthe Green
Junior Secondary Prose
- 1st Prize- Samara Foulds
- 2nd Prize – Sarah Cassidy
- Highly Commended – Holly Hurst
Senior Secondary Prose
- 1st Prize – Iasaiah Woods
- 2nd Prize – Kynan Fiaola
- Highly Commended – Amelie Kenney
Junior Secondary Poetry
- 1st Prize- Christine Park
- 2nd Prize – Sanbrina Blasco
- Highly Commended- Hannah Merlin
Senior Secondary Poetry
- 1st Prize – Sydney McQuillan
- 2nd Prize – Inez Curro
- Highly Commended – Ella Van Wensveen
- Commended – Avalon Howe
This year’s awards were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Mosman, Mosman Lions Club, Mosman Zu Café, Oracle Books Mosman and Northern Beaches& Mosman College. The total amount awarded for prizes was $2,500.
