Opening of new accessible amenities
Fully accessible facilities with family-friendly, ambulant and unisex toilets, as well as a drinking water fountain, have been officially opened at Mosman Junction.
Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Gareth Ward joined Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan in cutting the ribbon. Council representatives and members of the local Access and Mobility Community Consultative Committee also attended the opening of the new facilities, adjacent to the Raglan Street West Carpark.
The amenities were partly funded by the NSW Government’s 2019 ‘My Community Project’ program, which invited residents to apply for funding for projects that would benefit their local community in one or more of six categories: accessibility, culture, health, liveability, revitalisation and safety.
“This essential infrastructure was the result of outstanding teamwork by members of Mosman’s Access and Mobility Committee who developed a grant application and promoted the project to their fellow residents,” Cr Corrigan said. “The project received overwhelming support from our local community and the new amenities are an important addition to Mosman’s accessible infrastructure.”
Minister Ward said Mosman Council is a leading light when it comes to creating inclusive and accessible communities.
“The NSW Government is working closely with all 128 councils across the state, through their individual Disability Inclusion Action Plans, to deliver projects that enable people with disability to reach their full potential,” Mr Ward said. “Projects like this one in Mosman are creating a more inclusive and accessible community, and I commend the Council for the work they continue to do in this space.”
The accessible toilets project was one of 12 submitted from the North Shore electorate and received overwhelming support in an online vote from the Mosman community.
A grant of $200,000 was subsequently provided by the NSW Government for this project and Mosman Council, as sponsor, provided supplementary funding and delivered the project within 12 months.
