Mosman Design Awards winners
Some of Australia’s leading architects gathered at the Mosman Art Gallery last night for the presentation of the Mosman Design Awards 2019.
At the ceremony attended by Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan, Councillors, industry guests and home owners, five awards were presented to four properties from a field of 18 nominations.
The judging panel was made up of three industry leading architects, Gabrielle Morrish, Renato D’Ettorre and Nick Tobias. They selected the winning designs after site visits, deliberation and in-depth discussion on various factors including sustainability, use of materials, siting, innovation and functionality.
Overall Winner went to Almora House by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects. The award was accepted by Brian Zulaikha.
Constructed in timber, glass and concrete with a sculptural roof form, the judges felt Almora House shows what can be achieved through a successful collaboration between architect, builder and owner, and sets a new benchmark for residential architecture.
Judges commented that the undulating ceiling evokes Jorn Utzon’s ceiling in the Bagsvaerd Church in Copenhagen, and the interior has an ethereal quality, with abundant natural light, ever-changing curvatures and patterned slated timber formwork coming together for a “symphony of visual delight”.
Winner New Dwelling was awarded to Balmoral House by CHROFI. Nestled into a hillside site that presented many difficulties for the architects, the design was commended for its simple minimalism, sense of peace and calm, and cleverly maximising light and views.
Clanalpine House, winner of both the Alterations and Additions category and the People’s Choice Award, was recognised for demonstrating a high level of design skill to meet contemporary requirements in a Federation style property typical of Mosman’s residential character.
More than 350 votes from members of the public were received for the People’s Choice Award.
A Highly Commended was also awarded by the judges to Tamaras House by Marston Architects.
The Mosman Design Awards are held every two years to celebrate outstanding contributions to the built environment in Mosman.
The awards were widely commended by guests at the presentation ceremony for fostering collaboration between architects, builders and home owners, and encouraging excellence in local design.
