Rethink Rubbish pop-up beach events hit right spot

A new pop-up beach program is encouraging residents and visitors to Mosman to rethink their approach to waste and caring for the environment.

Rethink Rubbish will raise awareness of recycling practices within Mosman and how items which would normally go to landfill can be reused, while encouraging visitors to Balmoral Beach to leave the scenic location clean and free from rubbish.

“With regular changes to recycling practices around the state, we are aiming to keep our residents informed about kerbside recycling in Mosman through these fun activities such as the Recycling Relay and our updated signage and education material which highlights what is recyclable and what can be placed in a landfill bin,” Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan said.

“Mosman Council has been proactive in education and implementing litter reduction measures such as the 12 water stations which have been installed in the Mosman area which save 74,000 plastic bottles going to landfill annually. This is important given litter surveys show bottles, straws and single use plastics are the biggest litter problems in Mosman.”

Rethink Rubbish includes the following activities:

* Reverse Garbage: making marine creatures from recycled materials, educating small children on the importance of not littering

* Two Hands Project: making a re-usable bag out of an old t-shirt

* Seaside Scavenge: earn trash tokens while cleaning up the beach

* Circus Solarus Recycling Relay: a fun game for the whole family to remind people of items that can be recycled

* Shark in a Bus: heritage marine collection including an impressive 5m great white shark, affectionately known as ‘Frankie’.

The fun and family-friendly activities will take place during the summer school holiday period between 11 January and 25 January at Balmoral Reserve near the Rotunda. All activities are free apart from Shark in a Bus which incurs a $5 entry fee.
