Welcome support for community groups

Twenty two community groups received welcome support for their programs through the presentation of community grants by Mosman Council at a morning tea on 4 September.

The grants, totalling more than $55,000, are provided as part of Council’s 2018/19 Community Grants program that assists non-profit community groups deliver projects that meet identified community needs.

Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan who presented the grants, acknowledged the tremendous work of the non-profit community-based groups in supporting Mosman residents.

“Community groups and their volunteers are the social fabric of our community and each year we encourage local community groups to submit projects that will make a real difference in our community,” Cr Corrigan said. “We actively support initiatives by community groups that meet the social, recreational and cultural needs of our residents.”

Grants have been awarded for a range of projects, including a multicultural community forum; inclusion of people with disability at Mosman Market; a resilience program for young people, a dance and social program for people with Parkinson’s disease, and Carols at the Rotunda in Balmoral.

Last year’s grants resulted in a range of valuable community projects including a domestic violence awareness campaign, recreation and social engagement of young people; and a greenhouse and watering system at Mackie Lane Community Garden.

The grants program is one of several important ways in which Mosman Council supports community groups, including providing assistance to establish new services and programs, advocating for Commonwealth and/or State government funding, providing community information and promotion, facilitating communication and networking among local community groups, and providing opportunities for leaders to further their knowledge and skills in community management.

Cr Corrigan encouraged all community groups in Mosman to start considering possible projects for which they could apply for a grant next year and how they might work with each other and with Council. “We want to hear your ideas of how we can work in partnership,” she said.
