Bungaree was an esteemed early colonial Aboriginal leader, maritime adventurer and international diplomat. With Matthew Flinders, he was the first Australian to circumnavigate the continent.
In 1815 and 1822, Governor Macquarie gave “Boongary” and 15 other families land at present-day Mosman - part of Macquarie’s “Experiment” to "Civilize" the "Black Natives". Macquarie described it as a "Native Farm" and a “pretty Place” accessed by a “romantic Road” to a “Village”. But its exact location remains a mystery.
Linda's presentation will reveal hints from primary sources focusing on people who visited the Farm, and their written descriptions. Linda has also discovered relevant new evidence in the historical records.
Linda Bergin OAM, was the founding President of the Headland Preservation Group in 1996. She is presently an op-ed Contributor to the Sydney Morning Herald, writing about Sydney’s heritage and parklands.
With a keen eye for detail when scrutinising historical documents, and a special interest in the Aboriginal and Colonial history of Middle Head this talk promises to be an enlightening one.
