Mad - A celebration of mature age dance

Posted on Monday 9 October 2017

Mosman Council is hosting a unique afternoon of inspiring films, performances and presentations which challenge common perceptions that dancing and creativity are only for the young. Audience members who come to MAD – A celebration of mature age dance on Wednesday 25 October, will experience the talent and joy of older people who live to dance.

The films and performances showcase the groups of older people in Australia, New Zealand and Europe who come together to dance creatively and perform. Many have never danced before. Styles cover anything from Contemporary and classical to Hip Hop.

“We are thrilled to be having the renowned GOLDS come from Canberra to perform. The group members are aged 60-90 years, train in contemporary dance and perform in many cultural institutions in the ACT and overseas. They will definitely be a highlight for this event,” Community Development Officer Maya Jankovic said.

Also performing are members of Agile not Fragile a community dance group for the young at heart who are based in Penrith and perform and train at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.

The social, emotional and physical benefits of dancing as we age is well known and can add a spark to people’s lives.

“Having Dance for Parkinsons NSW involved in this event is incredibly important. Teachers from the group will demonstrate how a class for those with the condition can be fun for everyone – I know – I’ve tried it!” Maya said. “We would really like to get classes started on the north shore as well as contemporary classes for the general public and we’ll be trialling some classes here in November. An optional dance session at the end of MAD will help prove that dance is for everyone.”
