Tree vandalism

On Monday morning 19 February 2024, Council staff received a call from a Balmoral resident stating that they witnessed a person drilling a fig tree along the foreshore of Balmoral.

Council staff completed an onsite inspection and discovered nine fig trees in the area had been drilled. These included five semi-mature and four mature Port Jackson fig trees. Each tree had numerous drill holes, which may have been filled with herbicide, at their bases.

Contractors have washed out the drill holes and applied Seasol to the surrounding soil.

Council staff will be carrying out standard processes including writing to all properties within the vicinity of the drilled trees and will place signs at the site seeking further information from the public.

The incident has been reported to Police.

At this stage, Council staff are reasonably confident that the trees will survive.

The trees will be inspected regularly for further signs of distress.

International Women’s Day breakfast

Community members are invited to join the 2024 International Women’s Day breakfast, from 7.30am to 9am, on 8 March at Mosman Art Gallery.

Special guest Vicki Condon AM, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Raise Foundation, will share insights into her achievements and experiences, in conversation with Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan.

The day provides an opportunity to recognise the achievements of women and their contribution to society. The 2024 theme is ‘Inspire inclusion’.

Council has hosted International Women’s Day events for many years, with past guests including Australian Banking Association Chief Executive Officer and former Queensland Premier Anna Bligh; the former Governor of NSW Dame Marie Bashir; and television food presenter and author Maeve O’Meara.

Limited tickets are available for this year’s Council event. Bookings essential.

Citizen of the Year 2024

Scout leader Matthew Brownlie has been named 2024 Mosman Citizen of the Year.

The honour was awarded as part of an Australia Day event at Mosman Drill Hall, which also included a citizenship ceremony.

Mr Brownlie was recognised for his many years of volunteering with the 1st Balmoral Scout Group, where he has served as a leader since 2008 and played key roles in special events such as the local annual Sirius Cup Regatta and a range of camps, hikes and canoeing expeditions for large groups of adults and young people in locations across Australia and internationally.

Mr Brownlie has also played a role in mentoring other leaders and Scouts across northern Sydney.

His award followed a community-led nomination process.

Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan presented the award and also presided over a citizenship ceremony, where more than 30 conferees took the pledge to become Australian citizens.

Dementia-friendly communities

With cases forecast to more than double in the coming decades and a third of the population aged over 55, Council is supporting increased community awareness and education around dementia.

As part of the initiative, Council is hosting a Dementia Forum on 6 February and is working with Dementia Australia to offer free training on 8 February to volunteers, businesses, community champions and front-facing staff to help build a more ‘dementia-friendly’ community.

It compliments regular activities and events including: a weekly group for carers of relatives or friends with an illness, dementia or disability; art gallery tours and art-making for people living with memory loss and their family or friends; and interactive ‘Magic Table’ game sessions for seniors, including people managing dementia.

Tree treats for zoo herd

Natural Christmas trees collected from Mosman homes post-festive season found new purpose at Taronga Zoo.

Council’s annual collection of trees from outside residential properties was held this week as part of waste and recycling services.

Selected specimens were delivered to the zoo, to be used for food or play for the zoo’s elephant herd.

Keepers regularly provide enrichment items to encourage natural behaviours and keep the zoo’s animals active, healthy and sharp-minded.

At certain times of year, the enrichment may have a theme, with past programs for elephants featuring scarecrows at Halloween and giant paper mâché eggs at Easter.

Expressions of interest extended

Council is currently seeking Expressions of Interest from community members interested in joining its Flood Management Community Consultative Committee.

If you are interested in being a member, please take a look at the Committee Charter, which includes the committee’s terms of reference, composition, membership criteria and general operating guidelines. Meeting times will be open for discussion between Committee members and the Committee Chair.

Completed Expressions of Interest should be submitted to Council by 5pm Tuesday 30 January 2024.

Beware battery waste

Residents are being warned to safely dispose of batteries to help avoid the danger of fires igniting in homes and waste facilities.

It follows a growth in incidents reported by waste processing operators.

The advice from Kimbriki Resource Recovery Centre, which is owned by Northern Beaches Council and Mosman Council, comes as large numbers of consumers source new items and dispose of old ones during the summer holiday season.

Batteries, or items that contain batteries such as vacuum cleaners, toys, scooters and power tools, should not be placed in garbage bins or kerbside collections, as fires can start at the site or in waste collection trucks.

Batteries should be disposed of at designated drop-off areas. For Mosman residents, these include the Mosman Civic Centre, Kimbriki, and the Community Recycling Centre at Artarmon, as well as selected retailers such as Aldi and IGA.
