Dementia-friendly communities

With cases forecast to more than double in the coming decades and a third of the population aged over 55, Council is supporting increased community awareness and education around dementia.

As part of the initiative, Council is hosting a Dementia Forum on 6 February and is working with Dementia Australia to offer free training on 8 February to volunteers, businesses, community champions and front-facing staff to help build a more ‘dementia-friendly’ community.

It compliments regular activities and events including: a weekly group for carers of relatives or friends with an illness, dementia or disability; art gallery tours and art-making for people living with memory loss and their family or friends; and interactive ‘Magic Table’ game sessions for seniors, including people managing dementia.

Tree treats for zoo herd

Natural Christmas trees collected from Mosman homes post-festive season found new purpose at Taronga Zoo.

Council’s annual collection of trees from outside residential properties was held this week as part of waste and recycling services.

Selected specimens were delivered to the zoo, to be used for food or play for the zoo’s elephant herd.

Keepers regularly provide enrichment items to encourage natural behaviours and keep the zoo’s animals active, healthy and sharp-minded.

At certain times of year, the enrichment may have a theme, with past programs for elephants featuring scarecrows at Halloween and giant paper mâché eggs at Easter.

Expressions of interest extended

Council is currently seeking Expressions of Interest from community members interested in joining its Flood Management Community Consultative Committee.

If you are interested in being a member, please take a look at the Committee Charter, which includes the committee’s terms of reference, composition, membership criteria and general operating guidelines. Meeting times will be open for discussion between Committee members and the Committee Chair.

Completed Expressions of Interest should be submitted to Council by 5pm Tuesday 30 January 2024.

Beware battery waste

Residents are being warned to safely dispose of batteries to help avoid the danger of fires igniting in homes and waste facilities.

It follows a growth in incidents reported by waste processing operators.

The advice from Kimbriki Resource Recovery Centre, which is owned by Northern Beaches Council and Mosman Council, comes as large numbers of consumers source new items and dispose of old ones during the summer holiday season.

Batteries, or items that contain batteries such as vacuum cleaners, toys, scooters and power tools, should not be placed in garbage bins or kerbside collections, as fires can start at the site or in waste collection trucks.

Batteries should be disposed of at designated drop-off areas. For Mosman residents, these include the Mosman Civic Centre, Kimbriki, and the Community Recycling Centre at Artarmon, as well as selected retailers such as Aldi and IGA.

Christmas gifts delivered

Mosman residents have generously supported the 2023 Christmas Gift Appeal.

Over a three-week period, a total of 630 toys, books and other gifts were placed under the Christmas Tree in the Civic Centre foyer.

The items were then delivered to The Salvation Army for distribution to disadvantaged children across northern Sydney.

Coffee with a Cop

Mosman residents are invited to join local police for an informal catch-up over coffee or a cold drink on Friday 15 December.

Commander of the North Shore Police Area Command, Detective Superintendent Paul Devaney, and members of his senior management team are asking residents to drop-in between 10am and 11am at Chaos Café, at 573 Military Road, next to the Civic Centre in Mosman Square.

It is the first time the initiative has come to Mosman and has the full support of Mosman Council.

Coffee with a Cop brings police officers and the community members they serve together to discuss issues and learn more about each other.

Community walks for women

Hundreds of community members came together today (Friday 1 December) to join a collective action against family and domestic violence through Mosman’s annual Walk for Women.

Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan led the walk between Rawson Oval and Georges Heights, joined by other official guests, community members, officers from NSW Police and Royal Australian Navy base HMAS Penguin, representatives of Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, Taronga Zoo and the Rotary Club of Mosman, and representatives of domestic and family violence support services.

The walk was held during a global 16 Days of Activism campaign, culminating on Human Rights Day (10 December).

Kerry Chikarovski AM, former Board Director of Our Watch, a national leader in the primary prevention of violence against women and their children, said it was important for people to be aware of what was happening in their neighbourhood, and to speak up and call the Police if something wasn’t right.

Paul Devaney, Detective Superintendent and Commander, North Shore Police Area Command, said work related to domestic and family violence accounted for about 60 per cent of the Police’s time.

Phil Kearns AM, former Wallabies captain and father of four, addressed the crowd at Headland Park and spoke about parenting and fostering positive attitudes in young people to help build respect and healthy relationships.

The 2023 event was Mosman’s second annual Walk for Women.

Appeal to give generously this Christmas

Mosman residents are being urged to give generously to those in need this Christmas in support of disadvantaged children across northern Sydney.

Mosman Council’s annual gift appeal is running until 11 December, with people invited to place new, unwrapped gifts under the Christmas tree in the Civic Centre foyer.

Gifts for children and teenagers, including toys, books, puzzles, science kits, sporting gear, beach towels, personal accessories and toiletries, will be distributed by The Salvation Army.

Shop local this festive season

Mosman Chamber of Commerce, supported by Mosman Council, has launched its annual campaign to stimulate the local economy during the festive season.

‘Drop Your Dollars in Mosman’ encourages the community to spend locally across a range of sectors, from retail shops to restaurants and cafes and service-based outlets such as salons and fitness centres.

Receipts can be entered during November and December for the chance to win a monthly prize draw of $500. The business where the transaction took place will also receive $500.
