From the Mayor - 25 April 2019

Posted on Thursday 25 April 2019

Autumn is in the air and the Easter school holidays are upon us. I trust everyone stays safe during the holiday period and our children return refreshed and ready for a busy term two.

As our community celebrated and commemorated the centenary of our much loved Mosman Fire Station, the world awaits news of what can be salvaged of the much loved Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris after a devastating fire. The scale of the destruction certainly brings into sharp focus the amazing work all fire and rescue professionals undertake to keep humans and property safe.

On the subject of property, voting for the prestigious 2019 bi-annual Mosman Design Awards has closed and now all we await is the award presentation evening on 29 April at the Mosman Art Gallery. The judging panel is a who’s-who of industry leaders and the awards cover a range of architectural styles and include the ever popular People’s Choice Award.

Staying with Mosman Art Gallery, one of the most awaited events of the year is the 2019 Youth Art Prize for all artists between 12–21 years of age. The winners will be announced at the exhibition opening night on 10 May, with the exhibition running from 11 May to 9 June. I strongly encourage all residents to attend and marvel at the quality and volume of fantastic young talent on display.

National Volunteer Week will be celebrated from 20-26 May and if our community ever needed to appreciate the great work, support, friendship and encouragement provided by our wonderful volunteers, look no further than the recent Mosman Men’s Shed story in the Mosman Daily. Our volunteer numbers continue to be the envy of many other Councils and clearly showcase the depth of giving that exists in our community.

In closing, the 104th anniversary of Anzac Day was solemnly honoured at the annual Georges Heights dawn service and at events all over Mosman, including the Mosman RSL Sub Branch ceremony on Sunday 14 April at the Mosman War Memorial. Lest We Forget.
