From the Mayor - 29 May 2024

Posted on Wednesday 29 May 2024

As we head into the halfway point of 2024 our community winter sports programs are well underway with all ovals and both indoor and outdoor courts fully utilised for training and games. I am sure the Mosman Football Club and the Mosman Swans AFL Club are delighted to have full use of the newly opened Allan Border Oval Pavilion and it has been wonderful to get significant positive feedback about the precinct.

Council has also received many accolades for the improvements to Balmoral Oval and I am very pleased to inform the community that the plans for the Middle Head Oval pavilion have been submitted to the Harbour Trust, who will place the plans on public exhibition. The Georges Heights Oval pavilion upgrade is progressing, and the Reid Park playground upgrade will commence in October. Thank you to all our residents who made just under 100 public submissions with many suggestions incorporated into the final playground plans adopted by Council.

The uptick in girls’ participation in all sports sees our ovals and playing fields full or at over capacity. This was but one issue the General Manager and I discussed with Paul Scully, Minister for Planning, when we recently met to voice our concerns and discuss further the NSW Government housing reforms that will significantly alter the look and feel of Mosman. Council’s planning team also met with senior members from the Department of Planning and whilst I imagine all residents understand the need to increase housing supply, the one-size-fits-all model is haphazard, ill-considered and provides councils with no strategic capacity to deliver local solutions to build density that will work for our community.

The Mosman Public School Mini-Mos fun run and fair is celebrating 41 years as a major community fundraising and charity event. Please remember local streets around Mosman will be closed on Sunday morning 16 June, and in advance, I wish all competitors good luck and sincerely thank residents and local businesses for their generosity and understanding.

In closing, I am looking forward to rugging up and joining residents at the popular WinterFeast Night Market held at Mosman Square on Thursday 20 June from 4.30pm to 9pm.
