From the Mayor - 25 October 2018
The recent visit by the royals provided a wonderful opportunity for Mosman to showcase its natural beauty and for residents to participate in the excitement and history of the day. The Taronga Zoo visit ended with a ferry ride across our beautiful harbour. The same harbour that 30 years ago gave birth to the Clean Up Australia campaign, co-founded by the late Ian Kiernan AO and Mosman resident Kim McKay AO. Now over 30 million people in around 100 countries participate in the annual clean-up day and Kiernan’s action, vision and environmental legacy will continue.
One of Mosman’s most beautiful natural assets is our trees so it was extremely disheartening to hear of the destruction of a massive Angophora tree near Quakers Hat South bushland. I cannot stress more stridently that Council has a zero tolerance policy and will thoroughly investigate this criminal offence. As a community we all need to take responsibility to ensure we protect and preserve our beautiful natural environment.
November 11 represents the 100-year commemoration service of WWI Armistice Day. To continue our long history of respecting and preserving Mosman’s proud military history, I was delighted to recently assist the Mosman RSL Sub Branch in their successful Armistice Centenary Grant Program application to the Department of Veterans Affairs. The grant monies will be used to restore and update memorabilia for display in the Mosman Club premises.
Whilst in the village, it has been very heartening to receive positive feedback on the upgrade to Mosman Junction. As the balmy summer months arrive the outdoor dining environment will provide a convivial social and friendly community area for all ages to enjoy.
In closing, I would like to acknowledge the students of this year’s HSC examinations which are currently in progress and I take this opportunity to again wish all our students the very best of luck. As our school leaving young adults gear up for the annual schoolies week I trust they enjoy their celebrations and return home safely.
