From the Mayor - 27 September 2018

The recent two-part ABC program on the treatment of our elderly in aged care facilities was deeply disturbing. One issue raised was the loneliness and isolation experienced by many of our elderly in aged care facilities. Mosman Council runs a range of programs to work with our older residents and many of these services involve volunteers. Our wonderful volunteers are the life and soul of our community. If you would like to contribute to the work they do, please contact Council’s Volunteers Support Officer on 9978 4216.

October is Small Business Month and Mosman’s small businesses give vibrancy, personality and financial stability to our village. An essential component of a vibrant retail village is a parking strategy that will better manage existing parking supply and ensure fair and consistent turnover. Residents and the business community have been asking for action on this issue for years and I want to reassure residents that Council will make a considered and coherent decision in the best interests of all stakeholders.

October also heralds our spring Out and About series of concert and cinema events, which will kick off with a magnificent classical concert featuring soprano Amelia Farrugia beside our newly refurbished Balmoral Rotunda on Friday 19 October, the day after the 2018 HSC begins. I’d like to take this opportunity on behalf of every Mosman resident to wish all our students the very best of luck in their exams.

I also want to mention two events of historical significance being remembered by our community. Competing in an initiative of the Mosman Anzac Memorial Hall Trustees, Mosman High students wrote from the perspective of a Mosman resident involved in WWI on the Western Front with the winning prize being a life-changing 10-day trip to the European battleground. At Harnett Park a plaque to commemorate Richard Harnett’s Quarry and Incline Railway, one of Australia’s most remarkable engineering feats, will be unveiled by His Excellency The Hon. Tim Fischer AC. It is so important that we continue to proudly preserve and protect our history and heritage.

Lastly, I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe school holiday break.
