As we head towards the end of a tumultuous year, it was pleasing to see Council was able to provide some much-appreciated opportunities for local business people to network and build their skills in two Small Business Month events held earlier this month. Council has also been receiving very positive feedback from families who attended the first of our Mosman Movies nights last week with the final booked-out screenings on this coming weekend.
COVID has unfortunately curtailed Council hosting this year’s much loved annual Pets Day Out event on the Village Green. Luckily, restrictions have not affected Mosman dog owners from walking and exercising their pets on a daily basis and we are very blessed to be home to a number of beautiful off-leashed and leashed park and beach areas. I do need to remind all responsible dog owners that signposted restrictions are enforceable and that together we all play a part in keeping each other and other dogs safe.
National Recycling Week commences on 9 November and I am delighted to promote a fantastic home pick-up recycling service. RecycleSmart collects a multitude of items, including clothes and textiles. In the first recycling program of its kind in Australia for a local council, unwearable clothing will be recycled, rather than being sent to landfill. Visit mosman.nsw.gov.au for details. In other community-focused environmental news, Loani Tierney, Council’s Sustainability Education Officer has just won the coveted Louise Petchell Memorial Award for Individual Sustainability at the 2020 NSW Local Government Environmental Awards. I will welcome the President of LGNSW, Linda Scott, to our Council Meeting on Tuesday November 10 to present the award to Loani, which incidentally coincides with Council hosting its inaugural Climate Action Community Consultative Committee meeting.
In closing, Melbourne Cup is usually known as the race that stops the nation, but I wouldn’t mind betting that the 2020 US elections will be vying for that title as voters go to the polls on the first Tuesday in November. Never has voting, a most powerful of privileges, been so crucial for US citizens with many considering this election to be the most consequential the world has ever seen.
