From the Mayor - 29 June 2022

Posted on Wednesday 29 June 2022

I am just back from chilly Canberra after attending the Australian local government’s annual National Assembly with Cr Michael Randall and General Manager, Dominic Johnson. We were all so grateful for the opportunity to meet our peers and hear the stories of innovative ideas that continue to connect and transform local communities.

The most inspirational yet poignant addresses were inextricably linked – Stan Grant’s keynote on Global Democracy followed by the new Ukrainian Ambassador, His Excellency Vasyl Myroshnychenko, who with great candour and emotion told the conference that Ukraine will keep on fighting for its sovereignty and democracy. It was an absolute honour to meet His Excellency and I am sure I speak for all residents when I say Mosman stands united with the exceptionally brave and strong people of Ukraine.

An exciting innovation here at Mosman is the newly expanded science, technology and art-focussed Creation Space, just outside the library. Thanks go to the NSW Government for funding new filming, vlogging and podcasting equipment which complement the existing technology such as 3D printers, a laser cutter, robots, cricut cutting machines, 360 cameras, coding packages and VR.

Communities across Australia have the opportunity to celebrate our First Nations people and culture during NAIDOC week which commences on 3 July. Council is hosting a range of diverse events to interest all ages so please visit events.mosman.nsw.gov.au to find out more.

Community led Mosman Parks and Bushland Association will hold their 57th AGM on 26 July with the recently appointed Chair of the Mosman Environmental Foundation, Dr David Robertson as guest speaker. I recommend this public meeting to all as it will be a wonderful opportunity to hear about the Foundation's mission, founded with a generous bequest from former Mosman resident, Don Seaton.

Another fantastic community celebration will be our WinterFeast Night Market on 28 July. All fingers crossed for an evening of beautiful dry weather as, along with the Mosman Market on 6 August, this will mark the final major events before work commences on renewing, upgrading and making Mosman Square and the Village Green more accessible.

In closing, can I wish all families with school children a very safe winter holiday before the commencement of term three.
