Refurbishing Balmoral Promenade

Posted on Thursday 29 June 2017

If you have recently visited Balmoral Promenade, you will have noticed the progress being made with the restoration and upgrade to this national treasure.

Following two-month public consultation in late 2016/early 2017, with 26 submissions mostly concerned with the visuals of the new promenade, in February Council resolved unanimously works to refurbish the promenade.

The new pavement, designed with inputs from specialist architects, will provide a consistent surface which is in keeping with the heritage significance of the seawall. Works will also include renewal of stairs to the beach, improved lighting and footpaths connecting the promenade.

Further improvements will also be seen elsewhere along Balmoral, with seating and edging around the trees at the southern section to be provided through the replacement of timber logs with concrete seating.

Aesthetics aside, investigations by engineers had indicated many areas of the promenade, constructed initially in the 1920s and 1930s, had major cavities below the concrete slab, mainly as a result of erosion of subsoil, requiring significant repair works be carried out.

I can confirm that the major works on the promenade are currently on track for completion by end of September. Further, most of the additional upgrades are expected to be completed by November.

Unfortunately, such works inevitably create some noise and disruption to local residents and visitors. Our aim is to resolve the major work and high levels of disruption by early Spring and that residents and visitors alike will then all be able to relax in, and enjoy, the finished outcomes.
