From the Mayor - 29 November 2023
All is in readiness for Mosman’s second annual walk to raise awareness of the continuing level of unacceptable family and domestic violence in Australia. Domestic violence can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender or wealth. I invite all residents to come together at Rawson Oval 10am Friday, 1 December when we will walk, as one, to the Artists Precinct at Headland Park. Kerry Chikarovski AM, Detective Superintendent, Commander Paul Devaney from the North Shore Police Area Command and Phil Kearns AM, ex-Wallaby and father of three young adults will address the gathered audience.
Significant cost of living pressures will result in many families facing financial hardship and emotional distress this Christmas. If you can, please give generously to the Salvos Christmas Tree Appeal, which is the tree inside the Council Chambers. The other Christmas tree, just outside the Council Chambers, is a wonderful new addition to the Civic Square, thanks to Axtten Mison, Council’s Senior Designer. I look forward to seeing it light up the Christmas Night Market on Thursday 7 December.
In what has been a very challenging year for retail, I want to thank our local small businesses for their resilience and resolve and urge residents to enthusiastically support the Mosman Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Drop Your Dollars’ campaign at participating local shops.
Council’s Climate Action Resilience and Adaptation Strategy has been revised using information obtained from Council’s inaugural community environmental survey. Statistically robust data has been incorporated into the strategy to inform potential actions Council and the community will undertake together to combat climate-induced adverse events.
Sincere thanks to residents, volunteers and consultative committee members for your on-going care of Mosman and your community engagement over the past year. I also thank my fellow Councillors, the General Manager, Dominic Johnson, his executive and our dedicated Council staff for their professional assistance.
In closing, the Australian National Dictionary Centre has chosen “Matilda” as the word of the year for 2023. What a fantastic acknowledgment of the team that provided so much joy and inspired so many millions of people this year, particularly our young women and girls. I wish everyone a safe and happy festive and holiday season.
