Thanking our local volunteers

Posted on Thursday 24 November 2016

We in Mosman are very fortunate with the many volunteers that work in, and for, our community.

We have currently 323 active volunteers who regularly assist Council services such as Meals on Wheels, the Community Restaurant, Community Transport, Bush Care, Home Library, the Community Visitors Scheme, Local Studies, the Mosman Art Gallery and many more local services.

Due to the collaboration between Community Services and the Art Gallery, the Gallery has received funding to train volunteers to work with people with dementia. The program has been extremely successful and is to be copied across Northern Sydney over the coming months.

Bushcare, a major volunteer group, supports 79 registered and active volunteers working in 17 separate groups. They contributed 1750 hours of work protecting and enhancing local bushland sites.

Our Youth Services have also been innovative. Their latest program is a co-operative venture with OzHarvest, teaching healthy eating and food preparation skills. And Vocal Rewind, the youth music and events volunteering program, has been awarded an ‘Indent’ grant for a third year to fund music events for young people in Mosman.

Our volunteers have provided thousands of unpaid hours to help sustain key support services, provide recreational opportunities for our children, foster pride in our community and help deliver the one-on-one outcomes that would not be possible otherwise.

Many others in our community care for family and friends with a disability or who are older and frail.

In addition, many hundreds more contribute to local community, sporting, cultural and business organisations on a regular, seasonal or occasional basis.

On behalf of our community, I would like to express thanks to all who voluntarily provide services and support for other members of our community.
