What to do with unwanted household items?

Batteries, printer cartridges, fridges, light globes and even the kitchen sink can all be recycled for free! View Council‘s A to Z of waste disposal for full list of easy recycling options, or call Council on 9978 4076.

How to present household items for collection

Place items in front of your property the night before collection, ensure all items placed do not block footpaths, driveways or the roadway to minimise disruptions. A maximum of 5m3 is allowed per collection.

Mattress recycling

Australians send 1.2 million mattresses to landfill every year. Many mattress materials can be recycled at the end of their useful life. Examples include: foam, cotton, steel and wood.

Recycle your mattress free at your next Council clean up.

Here’s how:

  • Find your next household clean up date here
  • Place the mattress beside your clean up pile for easy collection and recycling
  • The mattress will be collected at a later stage following the removal of household items

What material is collected?

Glass and breakable items should be wrapped and secured, and mattresses kept to the side for separate collection. Recyclable items such as large pieces of cardboard and cardboard boxes, should instead be cut up and placed in your blue recycling bin.

The household clean up does not collect building materials, chemicals or e-waste, or items suitable for recycling through the yellow, blue and green bin system.

Did you know that all non-metal items collected during the household clean ups end up as landfill?

Sending waste to landfill causes environmental pollution, but you can prevent this from happening by sorting your unwanted household items for recycling or reuse:

  • Clothes can be donated to charities by placing them in the charity bins located in Mosman
  • Mattresses can be recycled through Soft Landing – 1800 763 852 or visit softlanding.com.au
For more options, check the A to Z of waste disposal.

Electronic (e-waste) recycling

E-waste contains invaluable resources that are lost if sent to landfill. 98% of these resources can be diverted from landfill. E-waste also contains toxic chemicals such as lead and mercury which are a risk to human and environmental health when disposed of in landfill. That’s why Mosman Council has now placed a ban on e-waste to landfill. Bans apply to TVs, computers, printers, scanners, DVD/VCR players, modems and gaming machines. E-waste items will not be collected in general household clean ups or pre-paid services.

Check the e-waste page for e-waste recycling drop off dates.
