Mosman Youth Awards in Literature

The Mosman Youth Awards in Literature (MYAL) is an annual short story and poetry competition that attracts budding poets, playwrights and authors from primary and secondary schools. Winners are awarded cash prizes and the opportunity to showcase their work. Write, submit, and share your voice!

The submission portal for MYAL 2025 opens Saturday 1 March 2025. 

General Information

Students are invited to submit a piece of story and/or poetry from the Categories below:

Story
Senior – Years 10, 11, 12
1st Prize — $350
2nd Prize — $150

Junior – Years 7, 8, 9
1st Prize — $200
2nd Prize — $100

Primary – Years K–6
1st Prize — $100
2nd Prize — $75

Poetry
Senior – Years 10, 11, 12
1st Prize — $250
2nd Prize — $150

Junior – Years 7, 8, 9
1st Prize — $150
2nd Prize — $100

The judges’ decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Conditions of Entry

  • ENTRY FORM and DECLARATION OF ENTRANT (either A or B) must be completed and signed by entrant and parent/guardian (not teacher) if under 18 years of age.
  • Please do not include your name or images on your work.
  • Work must be submitted in Word or PDF format.
  • Submissions must be the entrant's original work and not AI generated.
  • Mosman Library Service is authorised to display any entries and to publish all or part of an entry.
  • Entrants are advised to keep a copy of their work.

Submission Rules

Story

  • Entrants will submit ONE piece of original story of not more than 1,000 words on a theme of the writer’s own choice

Poetry

  • Entrants will submit ONE piece of original poetry of at least 20 lines on a theme of the writer’s own choice
