From the Mayor - 25 November 2020

Posted on Wednesday 25 November 2020

As I write my final column for 2020, I reflect on a year like no other in recent history for all peoples, both locally and globally. I feel an even stronger sense of community connection and resilience has emerged from the collective spirit of us all pulling together during a very turbulent year.

Residents clearly valued being able to attend in person and voice their concerns and opinions when the Mosman Local Planning Panel (MLPP) met last week to determine the Woolworths Metro development application. All speakers spoke eloquently and convincingly and the Panel listened, specifically noting the overwhelming number of public submissions opposing the application. This garnering of community opposition was to a large extent due to the determined efforts of the Mosman Village Community group. The Panel unanimously rejected the proposal and Council now awaits Woolworth’s response to the Panel’s determination.

Council’s long term financial sustainability remains strong and robust with prudent fiscal management steering Council through very challenging economic and social circumstances. The Annual Financial Statements and Auditor’s Report for year ending 30 June 2020 are on public exhibition until Tuesday 8 December.

In true festive spirit, Council’s 2020 Christmas Gift Appeal is up and running with residents invited to support the Salvation Army as they help families with children living in disadvantaged circumstances. Please place new, unwrapped gifts under the tree in the Council foyer by Thursday 17 December.

I sincerely thank all residents with special mention to our community volunteers and community committee members, my fellow Councillors and our dedicated Council staff under the leadership of General Manager Dominic Johnson because together we have all managed to navigate a challenging COVID-19 environment with resilience and good grace.

I wish everyone a happy and safe festive holiday season and a healthy New Year.
