Dr John O'Gorman played 18 Tests for Australia, touring South Africa twice and playing all five Tests on the 1966-67 Wallaby tour of Britain and France. A tall, skilful back-row forward, he was noted for his speed around the ground and his technique in scrums and mauls.
O'Gorman's father and three uncles were first grade backs, and initially he played on the wing at St Joseph's College. A switch to No.8 saw him progress from the GPS firsts to the Australian team within a few seasons. He made his Test debut against Fiji in 1961.
Career highlights included two memorable wins against a dominant South African team at Cape Town and Johannesburg in 1963, winning the 1965 series against the Springboks in Australia, and famous victories against England and Wales in 1966.
He missed New Zealand tours because of his medical studies, but won premierships with Sydney University in 1961 and 1962. He then played three seasons with Manly.
