A true character of the world surfing scene for 17 years, Barton Lynch began surfing at the age of eight. Affable and witty yet uncompromising, the dynamic goofyfoot surfer won the prestigious Junior Pro in 1983 and broke into the top 16 on his world tour debut.
Runner up in the world championship in 1985 and third in 1987, Lynch clinched the 1988 World Championship of Surfing by winning the Billabong Pro at Pipeline, Hawaii, in dramatic fashion.
Over the course of a 15 year pro career, he was placed in the top four eight times, a world tour record. He won 17 world tour events, including the Op Pro in 1987 and 1991 and the 1991 Rip Curl Pro. 1993 saw Lynch win the World Qualifying Series Tour, and in 1995 at the age of 32 he won the Rio Surf Pro.
Barton Lynch retired from competition in 1998, the year he was inducted into the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame. In 2000 the surfing champion was inducted into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame.
