Footbridge construction

Work is expected to begin in late August to replace the Harnett Park footbridge which was partially destroyed in a storm in December.

Following the appointment of a contractor to oversee the project, full replacement of the footbridge was deemed necessary with extended lead times in the supply of materials delaying the start of the project from last month.

The footbridge has been designed to complement the natural environment.

North Sydney and Mosman council staff have worked together to replace the bridge which spans the two council areas with construction expected to take about a month, weather permitting.

Fountain installed

The 18th century Italian Antico Fountain which was previously located next to the Village Green has been reinstalled in a more central location in Mosman Square.

A crane was used to bring the gleaming fountain to its new more prominent home as the finishing touches were put to the Mosman Square redevelopment project.

Final paving works, enhanced lighting and a new interactive children’s playground will be among further changes.

Library lounge areas

Barry O’Keefe Library is undergoing some updates with two new lounge areas set for completion by the end of July to provide additional spaces to read and relax and shelf layout changes so that related collections are closer to each other.

Fiction books have been moved to the bigger, main library space, while large print, biographies, DVDs and audiobooks are now where fiction used to be, and teen books have been moved downstairs.

The book sale earlier this month supported the ongoing development of library collections, with the library team adding more than 7000 new items each year, and selected older books being removed from the collection.

Boronia lease finalised

Mosman Council has welcomed an agreement with renowned boutique skincare, wellness and cosmetic treatment provider All Saint Clinics to lease Boronia, ending an almost year-long search for an appropriate tenant to utilise the state heritage-listed property.

The 10-year lease term includes two further five-year renewal options which will see the historic property restored and reinvigorated as a health and wellbeing landmark by All Saint’s project team led by international designer Blainey North.

The proposal includes a multi-purpose community health and wellbeing space for wellness-related events, as well as community accessible art through the establishment of an arts and sculpture garden in the surrounding grounds.

Founded more than 23 years ago, All Saint Clinics have two other Sydney locations, in Double Bay and North Parramatta, with planning for a London clinic underway.

The agreement ensures Boronia, as part of Council’s commercial property portfolio, will generate an adequate financial return and provide a substantial investment to restore the building while maintaining community access to the gardens and surrounds.

Allan Border Oval Pavilion work restarts

Work has restarted on the Allan Border Oval Pavilion project after Mosman Council entered into a contract with builder Reitsma Constructions to finish the remaining works including roofing, glazing, internal fit-out and landscaping.

Reitsma, which was founded 50 years ago, specialises in commercial construction and previously worked locally on the successful Mosman Swim Centre renovation project in 2020.

The restarting of works follows the previous contractor’s voluntary administration two months ago and subsequent liquidation after the main structure was completed.

The pavilion and grandstand will include ground floor change rooms, public toilet amenities, groundkeeper/storage facilities and a kiosk while first floor facilities, accessible via a lift, will include a function room, kitchen, toilets, scorers room and a terrace.

State-of-the-art features including solar panels and a rainwater harvesting system will minimise the impact of the building on the environment. Outside, a barbecue and practice netball/basketball court will be set in landscaped surrounds.

The pavilion is expected to open during the first quarter of 2024.

Pesticide Use Notification Plan

As part of its annual weed control program Council will be undertaking broad scale spraying of selective herbicides on its Parks and Reserves to control broad leaf weeds in turf areas during the following periods:

  • 24 July 2023 to 4 August 2023

And if required a follow up application:

  • 21 August 2023 to 25 August 2023

Council's Pesticide Use Notification Plan requires Council advertise broad scale spraying of herbicide to allow members of the public the opportunity to avoid contact with herbicide application. Council will ensure the herbicides are applied to public places in a safe, responsible manner, minimising harm to the community and the environment. Council will also ensure that all legislative requirements are met and followed. Council will have relevant safety data sheets on hand to respond to enquiries.

New footbridge underway

Work will soon begin to replace the Harnett Park footbridge which was partially destroyed when a tree fell in a storm in December.

A contractor has been appointed to oversee the replacement footbridge which is set to be completed by the end of July, weather permitting, after full replacement of the footbridge was deemed necessary.

The footbridge, which will comply with current Australian Standards, will be designed to complement the natural environment and, given the site’s difficult access, use construction materials that can be transported to the site by foot.

North Sydney and Mosman council staff are working together to replace the bridge which spans the two council areas.

Celebrating local volunteers

During National Volunteer Week in May, Mosman Council’s dedicated volunteers continued doing their bit to support Mosman’s older residents and build better community links.

Local resident Jeannie Yuill has been delivering Mosman Meals to locals for more than a decade and enjoys helping the community.

“I have met many lovely people over the years through volunteering and have enjoyed hearing their life stories - the volunteer coordinators are friendly, helpful and the work they do is a huge help to the community,” she says.

“If you enjoy helping people, making friends and want to be more involved in your community, I can highly recommend becoming a volunteer."

Mosman Council invites others interested in supporting older adults in the community with one or two hours available on weekdays to get in touch with Mosman Council’s Community Care team.

Fully-vaccinated volunteers with their own cars are being sought to help out Monday to Friday with Mosman Meals and the Community Links services.
