Volunteers are the heart of the Mosman community. They bring energy, passion, and skills that help create a vibrant, inclusive, and connected place for everyone. 

When you volunteer, you’re not just giving your time — you’re creating positive change, building friendships, and leaving a lasting impact on the lives of residents, businesses, and visitors. 

Our activities foster a sense of belonging, cultivate creative expression, promote social inclusion, challenge inequities, encourage sustainable practices, and enhance overall well-being in our community. 

Some of our current volunteer roles include: 

• Environmental and Outdoor: Bushcare, HarbourCare and Green Thumbs for 14–18-year-olds 
• Community and Aged Care Support: Mosman Meals, Community Links, Community Restaurant and Technology Troubleshooting 
• Arts, Culture, and Library: Mosman Art Gallery and Barry O’Keefe Library 
• Youth: Youth Volunteer Committee

With summer a peak season for enjoying the open water, recreational boaters are being reminded to check safety equipment, including marine flares.

If flares have expired, they need to be safely disposed of. Transport for NSW Maritime is running a mobile collection program to assist with safe, legal disposal.

For Mosman boaties, the next date and nearest site is Saturday 24 January 2026, from 7.30am to 9am, at Tunks Park Boat Ramp, Brothers Avenue, Cammeray.

Vessels operating in open waters are legally required to carry two red hand flares and two orange smoke flares. Flares must be within their expiry date, in good condition, and stored in a sealed, waterproof, and accessible container.

Expired marine flares are hazardous as they can explode, ignite, activate false alarms, lead to legal penalties, and harm the environment.

The Expired Marine Flare Collection Program provides a safe, easy, and free way to dispose of unwanted and expired marine flares, helping protect waterways and the environment.

With summer well and truly here, residents are reminded to be aware of swimming pool safety. It comes as Royal Life Saving Australia’s National Drowning Report 2025 found there were 357 drowning deaths over the past 12 months, which was 27 per cent higher than the 10-year average. Pool owners are advised to check that pool gates are self-closing and latching, that objects such as furniture and vegetation are not within 90 centimetres of a pool fence and that children are always actively supervised around water.

The Federal and NSW Governments have declared Sunday 21 December a Day of Reflection to honour the victims of the horrific terrorist attack at Bondi Beach and to stand in solidarity with the Jewish community. 

The Day of Reflection will be observed on the final full day of Chanukah, a time traditionally associated with light, faith and resilience, making the loss felt by the Jewish community even more profound. 

On Sunday, flags on Australian and NSW Government buildings will be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect for the lives lost and the grief shared across the country. 
All Australians share in this grief. 

We invite people across the country to light a candle at 6:47pm, exactly one week since the attack unfolded, as a quiet act of remembrance with family, friends or loved ones. We are also asking Australians to observe a minute of silence at 6:47pm. 

Statement from the Mayor of Mosman, Ann Marie Kimber regarding the Bondi Beach terror attack

Mosman Council and the Mosman community are deeply shocked and saddened by the terrible events that occurred at Bondi Beach. Our thoughts are with the Bondi community, the family and friends of victims and all first responders who cared for the injured and provided lifesaving care. Many in the wider community are understandably distressed and saddened by this terrible act of violence that has been perpetrated against people gathering for a joyful celebration of faith.
Our thoughts are particularly with the Jewish community who have been targeted in this heinous attack.

Mosman prides itself on being an inclusive and welcoming community and we wholly reject all acts of violence. We stand with communities of all faiths in condemning this senseless act of antisemitism and hate.

Council’s flags have been lowered to half mast and I encourage all community members to keep the victims in their thoughts and prayers.

A large banner has been installed at Balmoral following a suspected act of tree vandalism on the iconic foreshore.  

The alleged vandalism incident was reported to Council by a community member, and on inspection staff have determined that unauthorised pruning had occurred on two Fig trees located at Balmoral Reserve.   

These trees have been subject to previous vandalism as part of the attempted poisoning of 13 trees in February 2024.   

Potential court action may result if those responsible can be identified. The banner has been installed, in line with Council’s Urban Forest Management Policy, and seeks to act as a deterrent and an appeal for further information. Letters seeking information have also been issued to surrounding properties. 

Council wishes everyone in our community a safe and happy festive season.

Apart from public holidays, Council services at Mosman Civic Centre, Mosman Square Seniors Centre, Mosman Art Gallery and the Barry O'Keefe Library will be available during normal operating hours over the holiday period with the exception of:

• 3pm closure on Friday 5, Wednesday 24 and Wednesday 31 December
• The Mosman Meals kitchen will be closed from 1pm on Wednesday 24 December and reopen on Friday 2 January. Prior appointments will be required for Community Care services and facilities between 24 December and 2 January
• Mosman Youth Centre will be closed from Friday 19 December and will reopen with Youth Holiday Programs from Monday 12 January
• Marie Bashir Mosman Sports Centre and Drill Hall will be closed on public holidays
• Mosman Swim Centre will be closed on Christmas Day only. Contact the centre for changes to operating hours on other days.

Council Rangers will be on duty throughout the holiday period.

Waste collections will continue as normal with the exception of pre-paid waste and pre-paid green waste bookings which will not operate between Thursday 25 December and Thursday 1 January. The additional Christmas tree collection will occur between Monday 5 and Friday 9 January.
